This was India's inaugural tour of Australia and it was also the first tour by a team representing the newly independent India. Independence had been finalised only two months before the tour began. In the first Test, India was dismissed for 58 by Australia in Brisbane. Fast bowler Ernie Toshack took 5 for 2 off 2.3 overs.
